Wandering Cape Cod Bear Reaches Provincetown

BOSTON (CBS) - The bear moving from town-to-town on Cape Cod reached Provincetown Wednesday, police confirmed to WBZ-TV.

It was seen along Route 6 in the National Park around 6:15 a.m.

Authorities are still trying to trap it and relocate it.

The last reported sighting was in Orleans when the bear was caught on an infrared camera early Saturday morning.

The Associated Press is reporting that state wildlife officials may capture the bear and relocate it now that it has reached the end of the Cape.

Relocation would reportedly involve tranquilizing the bear with a dart and moving him off the Cape.

It's likely this is the first bear that's ever been seen on the Cape in modern times. Experts believe it swam across Cape Cod Canal to get there.

In the last two weeks, the bear has been spotted in Brewster, Barnstable, Dennis, and Yarmouthport.

He's wandered at least 50 miles during his journey.

During its time eluding authorities, the bear has gained local celebrity status, even inspiring a fake Twitter account.
