YARMOUTH (CBS) – Several residents spotted a large bear in Yarmouthport on Wednesday morning and in Dennis later in the afternoon.
At around 6:30 a.m., Yarmouth police received several phone calls from residents who said they saw the bear.
Police responded to the Center Street area of Yarmouthport and moved eastward to the Route 6A area, but were unable to locate the bear.
Dennis police, though, received a report at 1:45 p.m. that a black bear was spotted running across Route 6A and into a condominium complex.
An officer entered the complex and saw the bear running around and into a nearby wooded area.
The bear was then spotted several times in the area and was last seen near Billingsgate Road at around 2:40 p.m.
“State officials advise that there is no significant cause of alarm. Officials report that the best advice is to give the bear its space and do not over react,” said Lt. Steve Xiarhos of the Yarmouth Police Department, in a press release.
A bear was also spotted in Barnstable recently, likely the first bear sighting ever on the Cape. Police said the bear likely swam across the Cape Cod Canal.
The bear spotted in Yarmouthport and Dennis is believed to be the same one spotted in Barnstable.
