EA Removes Aaron Hernandez From New Madden, NCAA Football Video Games

BOSTON (CBS) - Aaron Hernandez won't be showing up on the football field any time soon and that includes the virtual world too.

Hernandez, who is currently being held without bail in the Bristol County Jail charged with first-degree murder, has been removed from this year's versions of EA's popular football games, NCAA Football '14 and Madden NFL 25, an EA spokesperson told CBSSports.com.

A photo of a Hernandez "Ultimate Team Item" from NCAA Football '14 made its rounds on Twitter Monday morning, but EA says it will be removed in a future update.

"We made a decision to remove Aaron Hernandez from Madden NFL 25 and NCAA Football 14. Because NCAA Football 14 was finalized prior to our decision, Hernandez' image still appears in the Nike Skills Trainer," a spokesperson for EA Sports told CBSSports.com.

"However, he is not in the game, and anyone who unlocks that particular Nike Skills Trainer reward will receive an Alex Smith Ultimate Team player item instead. The image of Hernandez will be removed via a Title Update in the near future."

Hernandez was cut by the Patriots hours after his arrest, and his jersey and other memorabilia were removed from the team store that day.

Over the weekend, thousands of Patriots fans went to Gillette Stadium to exchange their Hernandez jerseys for a different player.
