Keller @ Large: There Will Be Another Female Nominee

BOSTON (CBS) - I was chatting with an acquaintance of mine Monday when he asked a question that brought me up short – who will be the next female major-party presidential nominee?

Let's start with the Republicans.

Carly Fiorina fit the Donald Trump mold in some ways, business background, tough-talking style. But it's hard to see her improving on her dismal showing this year.

Sarah Palin? Let's see if she gets some kind of high-profile job from Trump, and does a decent job at it. But it feels like the moment has come and gone for her. Michelle Bachmann? No. Gov. Nikki Haley of South Carolina might make some sense.

And when I review the list of Trump celebrity endorsers, Loretta Lynn jumps out at me. "The coal miner's daughter"… yes, that might work.

How about the Democrats?

My friend mentioned Michelle Obama, and she is impressive in many ways, but I think the voters just expressed a lack of enthusiasm for political family dynasties.

Our very own Sen. Elizabeth Warren might be interested, but I question the nation's appetite for yet another Massachusetts candidate.

Regular readers and listeners know I have long advocated for a run by Oprah, but I'm pretty sure she is too busy to run. And while actress Lena Dunham remains eligible now that she has decided not to flee to Canada, I wonder about her appeal outside of Manhattan.

Make no mistake, there will be another female nominee.

Unless women are just too smart to ever want to put themselves through that ordeal.
