Brockton School Removes Light Poles After One Falls On Student

BROCKTON (CBS) --  A Brockton elementary school has removed all poles on its property after a student was hurt by a falling light pole.

The rusted pole hit a Downey School student on Wednesday, pushing him to the ground. He is expected to be OK.

"There was no indication, no warning whatsoever that there was a question of the integrity of the pole," said Brockton Mayor Bill Carpenter.

Crews arrived early Thursday morning to cut down 14 other light poles. The poles were erected in 1972, when the school was built.

"Clearly, student safety is our first priority," Carpenter said.

The city plans to replace the structures with aluminum poles with LED lights.
