Brockton Student Injured During Recess By Falling Pole

BROCKTON (CBS) – A second grade student in Brockton was injured after a light pole fell and landed on him while he was playing at recess.

Brockton Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Smith said the incident happened Wednesday at Downey School.

The pole, which was rusted at its base, landed on the student's back and pushed him to the ground.

Three teachers helped move the pole of the boy, along with the principal and a custodian.

A school nurse said the boy had bumps and bruises. But an ambulance was called as a precaution.

Electricians assessed other poles in the area and any that appeared weak were taken down.

A contractor will remove the rest of the poles that are original to the building, which was built in the 1970s..

"The wellbeing and safety of our students is of our utmost concern and we are grateful that today's accident was not more serious," Smith said.

"The student was simply enjoying recess on a beautiful day. We are all thankful and pleased that he is doing well. And we are taking prudent steps to remove and replace every one of the poles at the Downey."
