Whitman Police Continue Search For Man Who Tried To Abduct 9-Year-Old Girl

WHITMAN (CBS) -- Investigators have received several tips about possible suspects in an attempted abduction of a 9-year-old girl in Whitman on Friday, but none of them proved to be the man involved in the incident.

A man tried to grab the girl out of a driveway on Lazel Street around 4:16 p.m., according to the Whitman Police Facebook page.

She had been playing with two other girls, when the man grabbed her from behind and covered her mouth with his hand, police say. The man may have been startled by the other girls and ran away behind the house in an unknown direction, investigators added.

East Bridgewater Police assisted Whitman Police by searching the Commuter Rail on South Avenue. Despite K9 units conducting an "exhaustive search," police said the man couldn't be found.

The suspect is described as a white man standing 5-foot-10-inches tall in his late 20s-to-early 30s, with a thin build, clean shaven, and acne on his face.

He also was seen wearing a black stocking hat, brown jacket, blue jeans, black shoes, and black fingerless gloves, police say.

Anyone with information is asked to call Whitman Police at (781) 447-1212.
