Whitman Police Looking For Man Who Tried To Abduct Girl

WHITMAN (CBS) – Police are looking for a man who tried to abduct a 9-year-old girl in Whitman Friday afternoon.

Detectives say the man was walking when he tried to grab the girl out of a driveway.

The girl's grandparents were watching her and two friends Friday afternoon when the trio went to play outside.

The girl's mother, Kelly, says the man was standing behind a camper in the yard. "He came up and grabbed her and covered her mouth and she said that he said something to her in a really low whisper that she couldn't understand," Kelly told WBZ-TV's Julie Loncich.

It was just after 4:00 p.m. on Lazel Street, in a heavily populated Whitman neighborhood.

"Then he heard the two other girls playing and he got spooked and he ran off," Kelly said. "He jumped the neighbor's fence and ran through their back yard."

Police describe the suspect as a white man, clean shaven, with heavy acne. He is approximately 5'10" tall.

He was last seen wearing a brown jacket, blue jeans, a black stocking hat and finger-less black gloves.

Police canvassed the neighborhood for hours, collecting evidence and gathering tips but were unable to find the man.

Kelly says her daughter is shaken, but OK.

Anyone with information is asked to call Whitman Police.
