Girl Killed In Maine Hayride Crash Identified

MECHANIC FALLS, Maine (CBS) – A teenage girl died overnight from injuries she suffered during a hayride crash Saturday night.

The Maine Fire Marshal's Office confirmed that a 17-year-old girl died at an area hospital after a hayride carrying as many as 30 people rolled over at Harvest Hill Farms along Route 26 in Mechanic Falls.

On Sunday afternoon the fire marshal's office identified the girl who was killed as Cassidy Charette, of Oakland, Maine. She was at the farm with several other students from Messalonskee High School in Oakland.

Two others remain in critical condition on Sunday. A teenage boy and the driver of the Jeep that was pulling the hay wagon suffered the most serious injuries of the surviving victims, the fire marshal's office said.

The teenage boy was also from the school. He has been identified as Connor Garland of Belgrade, who is being treated at Boston Children's Hospital for a partially broken back and jaw, but is expected to survive.

The fire marshal also said that David Brown, 54, of South Paris, Maine, was the driver of the Jeep. He is currently being treated at a hospital in Lewiston.

In total 22 people were injured when the hay wagon being pulled by the Jeep lost control, careened down a hill, struck a tree and overturned.

Investigators said on Sunday that a mechanical problem with the Jeep is the likely cause of the incident. Maine State Police will inspect the Jeep in the aftermath of the crash.
