Dave Richard: What Should Fantasy Owners Do With Adrian Peterson?

BOSTON (CBS) - CBS Sports fantasy football expert Dave Richard came on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich Thursday morning, as he does every Thursday for the entirety of the NFL season, to provide his Week 3 advice.

The discussion started with Adrian Peterson, who's made his fair share of news off the field for all the wrong reasons. While Adrian Peterson is dealing with some real world issues, there are many wondering what to do in fantasy land.

"I don't know when he's coming back. No one knows for sure. There's a chance it's later this season. There's a chance it's not at all this season. There's a chance it's never again. If you've got him on your fantasy team you either have to hold onto him, trade him for cheap, or if you're desperate for a roster spot and need somebody on waivers, cut him. He definitely won't play anytime before he goes to trial, that's in October. Then if the trial is delayed or what have you, it could be even longer than that. It's a situation where if you have Peterson, it's a good idea to go and get Matt Asiata. He's not a great talent, but he's gonna get the ball a lot. I would roll with Asiata until Peterson comes back, or until it's clear he's not coming back."

The story of Week 2 was all the injuries, and now in Week 3 the issue for fantasy owners becomes health and if these banged up players are ready to go.

Rich Keefe's Fantasy Brief: Thursday Night Football

Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green is dealing with turf toe, and Richard gave an update on his status for Sunday against Tennessee.

"[Head coach] Marvin Lewis said this morning that he expects A.J. Green to play. It'll be interesting to see if he gets out on the practice field today or tomorrow. If he can get in a full practice by then, then I think he will play. I don't know why they're rushing him. I think they can beat the Titans without him, and they have a bye the week after. I'm not sure why they're doing it, but if he can play, sure, start him."

Jon Wallach was curious to know if versatile Chargers runner Danny Woodhead is a good flex option this week.

"Yeah I think he is. He started slow last season too, and then started to get in the mix with that offense. Now that Ryan Mathews it out, Woodhead is their best back. I think Brown could be their best in fantasy, but Woodhead will get the ball more. Woodhead was playing more even before Mathews got hurt. Mathews was only playing 25-30 snaps per game."

Since the NFL moved to a full slate of Thursday night games, the offensive numbers haven't been great for teams, who are coming off just three days of preparation. Wide receivers are banged up and slower, quarterbacks aren't able to maintain rhythym and are more inaccurate.

Thursday Night Football Fantasy Starters: Tampa Bay vs. Atlanta

However, running backs are the one position able to maintain success in the Thursday nighters. Tampa Bay ball carrier Doug Martin, who missed Sunday's game in Week 2, will get the start in Week 3 and Dave Richard likes what he'll be able to do against a porous Falcons defense on the fast Georgia Dome turf.
