Patriots Place Mankins, Spikes On PUP List

BOSTON (CBS) - With training camp beginning Thursday, the New England Patriots placed six players on the active/Physically Unable to Perform list on Monday.

The Patriots placed guard Logan Mankins, linebacker Brandon Spikes, offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer, defensive tackle Myron Pryor and tight ends Daniel Fells and Jake Ballard on the PUP list on Monday, but each can be activated at any time in the next month.

Landing on the list means each player will likely not be ready for the start of camp on Thursday, but the team does not have to decide to place injured players on the reserve/PUP list -- keeping them out for the first six weeks of the season -- until just prior to the regular season.

Mankins underwent surgery in February to repair a torn ACL in his left knee -- an injury he played through in Super Bowl XLVI.

There was good news in that tight end Rob Gronkowski did not land on the list after undergoing offseason surgery on the ankle that hampered him in Super Bowl XLVI. Gronkowski was one of injured veterans to report to Gillette on Monday, and it appears as though he should be ready to go for the opening of camp on Thursday.
