Report: Theo Epstein Invited To Fenway Celebration After Initial Omission

BOSTON (CBS) - After initially not inviting Theo Epstein to Fenway Park's 100th anniversary ceremony, the team reversed course Thursday afternoon and invited the former Red Sox general manager, according to CSNNE's Sean McAdam.

The team decided to invite Epstein, along with other former GM's Dan Duquette and Mike Port, to watch the ceremonies from a suite at Fenway Park.

Epstein, though, will be unable to attend.

"I hope tomorrow is a great day for Red Sox fans and for the whole organization," Epstein told McAdam, a frequent on-air guest on 98.5 The Sports Hub. "I have plans to be at the Cubs game tomorrow, but I will take a moment to toast Fenway along with everyone else who loves that ballpark."

Earlier Thursday, owner John Henry told McAdam he was surprised by the initial non-invite.

"Apparently we decided to just invite uniformed personnel," Henry told McAdam.

Epstein, who left the Red Sox to become the President of Baseball Operations with Chicago Cubs after last season, helped build the teams that won the World Series in 2004 and 2007.

Former manager Terry Francona will be in attendance at the ceremony on Friday. He originally declined the invitation.
