'Cuts For A Cause' Raises $58K For Floating Hospital For Children

BOSTON (CBS) – The Boston Bruins have gone bald for the fifth straight year.

At least most of them have.

With the playoffs right around the corner, 17 members of the Bruins got haircuts on Wednesday, and all for a good cause.

Wednesday was the fifth annual "Cuts for a Cause" at Royale in Boston, put on by B's forward Shawn Thornton and 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich. Lucky fans who bid to shave their favorite Bruins' head got their day to play barber, with all proceeds of the event going to the Boston Bruins Foundation and Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.

Watch All The Fun:

After raising over $40,000 last year, the fifth annual "Cuts For A Cause" raised over $58,000.

"Every year it's more and more humbling. It's amazing how big it gets; it surprises me every year," Thornton said after getting his haircut. "Hopefully we can keep it growing and get more and more every year."

"'Cuts for a Cause' has grown every year. It's humbling how much its grown and how much money the event has been able to raise this year," said a freshly shaved Fred Toettcher. "Shawn Thornton has been so great with it, the Boston Bruins foundation and [98.5 The Sports Hub] have been so great in supporting it, and all the Bruins players that participated have been fantastic. It's really humbling we have been able to raise that much money with this event."

Thornton and teammates Patrice Bergeron, Johnny Boychuk, Jordan Caron, Zdeno Chara, Nathan Horton, Chris Kelly, Torey Krug, Milan Lucic, Brad Marchand, Adam McQuaid, Mike Mottau, Daniel Paille, Benoit Pouliot, Rich Peverley, Tyler Seguin and Dennis Seidenberg all let fans sheer away their locks on Wednesday, and had a blast doing so.

"It's a lot fun to be a part of this," said assistant captain Patrice Bergeron, fresh off his fifth haircut from a fan. "To see the event growing like this too… It's something we're all excited about and we hope it keeps growing like that."

"My teammates are unbelievable. They don't have to do this at all," said Thornton. "I owe them. Every year I owe them."

"Obviously it helps that we have so many guys that are so willing to do it. Heading into the playoffs right now this is kind of the look we have; the shaved head look," said Milan Lucic, who said it felt like someone turned the AC on after his buzz-cut. "We keep getting the support, and we keep raising the money we do; having the auction for the guys. It's really awesome that it's all for a great cause and it's a lot of fun. Toucher and Rich make it a lot of fun, that's for sure.

A few of the standouts from the event include defenseman Adam McQuaid, who received a trimming on his mullet which was given to him at the fourth annual "Cuts For A Cause." New-comer Torey Krug, who just signed with the team on Sunday, got his long locks trimmed by the Bruins bear. Even Benoit Pouliot's famous hair was swept away at the end of the day.

Lucic Gives Adolfo A Haircut:

98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich didn't get away un-cut, as both hosts sat next to Thornton to kick things off. Adolfo was given an... interesting cut by Milan Lucic. Even Michael Felger got in on the fun, getting his semi-buzz back at the Hub studio in Brighton.

All of the money raised is heading right to the Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center's "Child Life Services Activities," "Shooting Stars" and "Very Important Brothers and Sisters" programs.

Over five years, "Cuts For A Cause" has raised over $200,000.
