Bledsoe Named Fourth Honorary Captain For Patriots In AFC Championship

BOSTON (CBS) – Drew Bledsoe has been named the fourth and final honorary captain by the New England Patriots for Sunday’s AFC Championship game against the Baltimore Ravens, the team announced Friday.

Bledsoe will join Troy Brown, Ty Law and Tedy Bruschi as the team’s four honorary captains for Sunday’s game. All four were part of the team’s 1996 AFC Championship team that beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-6 in Foxboro, and contributors to the 2001 Super Bowl Championship team.

“I’m pretty fired up, excited to come back for the game and excited to be back in Boston for a bit,” Bledsoe told 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Gresh & Zolak Friday afternoon.

“I remember that ’96 season, when we had the privilege of hosting our first Championship game, and these four people were in the game,” owner Robert Kraft said Friday at Gillette. “I remember the thrill I had getting that first Lamar Hunt trophy, and then unfortunately we didn’t win the big game, but five years later, those same four players were on the team and we were able to win [Super Bowl 36].”

Bledsoe is making the cross-country trip from Washington state to be at the game on Sunday.

Although he was replaced by quarterback Tom Brady, Bledsoe replaced an injured Brady during the 2001 AFC Championship at Pittsburgh and helped New England to a 24-17 victory.

Bledsoe was selected first overall by the Patriots in the 1993 draft and was the face of the franchise for the next eight years. He led the Patriots to the playoffs four times in his first six seasons.

During his nine-year Patriots career, Bledsoe broke the team’s career passing records for attempts (4,518), completions (2,544) and yards (29,657).

It was Bledsoe who this Organization and Players rallied around, because he always got hity, & always got right back up and said “let’s Play”….It was Bledsoe that came back in after Brady got rocked and stumbled to the side line, Bledsoe cam back in, finished what he started and was the one who actually COMPLETED and MADE THE PLAYS NECESSARY IN ORDER FOR THE TEAM TO ADVANCE IN THE FIRST PLACE. B ledsoe got on average like 1.3 seconds average to throw the ball all during most of his career and during the the early Re-Birth of the Patriots. It was Bledsoe who guy’s like Teddy Jihnson, Willie McGiness, Ty Law, and other’s rallied around and the reason they strived to be better………
HE DOES DESERVE IT, He also deserves for the main drive around Gillette Staduim to be name BLEDOSE DRIVE as well!
BEST THROWBACK PATRIOT JERSEY AROUND………#11 BLEDSOE.

Kill me now…Bledsoe is a horrible choice and a jinx. It’s like asking Tony Eason. What about Steve Grogan? Love Bruschi, sad his career was cut short.

drew bledsoe helped put patriots back on map after being drafted 1993 they did go to super bowl in 1996I .I could see steve grogan as one of the captins of tommorrows game i dont know who was in charge of selections .Tony eason was ok , what about big John Hannah or andre tippet

    2. P.Hurd Jr. says:

Wake up, without Bledsoe the Pats would be in Conn. He changed the direction the team went. Brusci,Vrabel and Brady would be playing for other teams. NOBODY put this team in the right direction more than Drew Bledsoe ,Bill Parsells and with the right choice Robert Craft set these things in motion. Maybe they should have taken Rick Mirer.Drew Bledsoe Patiots Hall of Fame.

YOU ARE SHOWING TWO SCORES FOR THE PATS’ WIN IN THE SUPERBOWL OVER THE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS IN 1996. WHICH WAS THE CORRECT SCORE? (not that it matters much). WAS IT 20-16, OR WAS IT 20-6?
