Beckett Leaves In Fourth Inning With Sprained Ankle

BOSTON (CBS) - Josh Beckett was flying through the Blue Jays lineup with ease on Monday, until an injury derailed his solid outing.

The Red Sox starter left with two outs in the fourth inning after suffering a sprained right ankle. Beckett had pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings, striking out six blue Jays. He appeared to have caught his foot in front of the pitching rubber after delivering a pitch.

After the game, Beckett said his ankle felt sore. The severity of the injury is unknown at this time, but could be cause for concern since it is Beckett's pushing-off foot.

"I felt it on the second to last pitch and then it felt a little bit different on the last pitch I threw," he said. "I didn't feel it till those last two pitches.

"It felt like it was locked up and then it popped in and out of the socket or something," Beckett added.

Beckett will leave the team to see a doctor in Boston Tuesday.

Heading into Monday's start, Beckett was 12-5 with a 2.53 ERA. Reliever Alfredo Aceves came in for the injured Beckett.

Before the game, Manager Terry Francona said he hoped to give Beckett an extra day of rest before his next two starts.
