Patriots Announce Deal With Ellis

FOXBORO (CBS) -  The New England Patriots officially announced the signing of defensive end Shaun Ellis on Monday.

The move by Ellis had been confusing to some, but now is starting to make some more sense.

Why did Ellis sign with the Patriots and leave New York, his home for 11 NFL seasons? The answer could be money.

Sources are saying the Jets offered a one-year deal for $910,000. New England came in with a much bigger deal, offering that same one-year for $4 million, plus an additional $1 million in incentives.

At 34-years old, Ellis got a deal he could not turn away.

"Certainly Shaun has played a lot of good football against us," said Belichick on Monday. "He's been a very productive player – he's durable and very consistent. It seems like every time we play him, he lines up there and we have a hard time with him."

"The fact that we had an opportunity to add him to our team, we feel fortunate," said Belichick. "I think he brings a good presence in terms of his leadership and his professionalism, as well as experience and his style of play and his performance."
