Gonzalez To Hit Home Runs For Charity

BOSTON (CBS) – Every home run Adrian Gonzalez hits in his first season as a member of the Boston Red Sox will be a lot more special than runs on the scoreboard.

Each time he hits one out of the park, Gonzalez and Eastern Bank will donate $1,000 to select Habitat for Humanity affiliates serving eastern Massachusetts.

Eastern Bank, through its charitable foundation, will donate $500 for each Gonzalez home run this season. Gonzalez and his wife, Betsy, will match each donation.

"Betsy and I very much look forward to being part of Red Sox Nation," Gonzalez said.  "That means not only helping the Sox win.  It also means partnering with great organizations such as Eastern Bank and giving back to the community in a way that is meaningful and lasting."

At the end of this regular season, the money raised from the program will be divided equally among the following Habitat for Humanity affiliates:

  • Buzzards Bay Area Habitat for Humanity
  • Habitat for Humanity Greater Boston
  • Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod
  • Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell
  • Habitat for Humanity of Greater Plymouth
  • North Shore Habitat for Humanity
  • South Shore Habitat for Humanity

Gonzalez hit 31 home runs for the San Diego Padres in 2010 in a cavernous ballpark while battling an injured shoulder. Imagine what he can do at Fenway Park now that he is healthy.

It should make for some big donations to Habitat for Humanity at the end of the season.
