Snow And Traffic Update: Several Crashes, Spinouts

BOSTON (CBS) – Here is the latest update from the Massachusetts State Police on road conditions for Friday's storm:

Check: Traffic Updates

From State Police spokesman Dave Procopio:

We estimate that we have close to 400 troopers patrolling state roads at this time.

Patrols and barracks generally reporting moderate to heavy snow and moderate traffic.

Most crashes are minor in nature, with many spinouts and cars into snowbanks or off the road. Several more significant incidents, including jackknifed or disabled tractor trailers and car rollovers have not resulted in serious injuries.

We remind motorists to go slowly and to leave adequate space – at least three vehicle lengths – between themselves and the vehicle in front of them.

Northeastern Massachusetts: Troop A patrols continue to respond to numerous spinouts and vehicles off the road. Troopers remain on scene at ramp from 93 North to 495 south where a tractor trailer was disabled and awaiting a heavy tow truck.

Metropolitan Boston and MetroWest: Troop H patrols responding to multiple spinouts and minor crashes, with no injuries reported. Heavy snow continues.

Southeastern Massachusetts: Troopers working minor crashes throughout the reion, including, currently, at least five spinouts. On the Cape, precipitation is rain and troopers are checking for flooding. Weather conditions throughout the troop range from rain to moderate snow. Day shift personnel called in two hours early, at 0500 hrs. Midnight shift has been extended at least 2 ½ hours to 0930 hrs. Specialty unit troopers supplementing regular patrols.

Central Massachusetts: Troop C Barracks reporting moderate to heavy snow. No road closures at this time. Midnight shift has been extended indefinitely; troopers from specialty units supplementing regular patrols.

Western Massachusetts: Storm appears to be winding down in western Mass. Troop B barracks reporting light snow. No significant crashes; no road closures. Midnight shift held over at least 2 hours , to 0900 hrs.

Massachusetts Turnpike: A cruiser from Troop E was stationary at the scene of a minor crash westbound at Interchange 19 in Brighton when it was rear-ended by another vehicle. The trooper suffered non-life threatening injuries and has been transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth's Hospital. We are not identifying the trooper at this time. A second ambulance is en route to evaluate the driver who struck the cruiser, who is reporting pain. The investigation is ongoing as to whether charges are warranted.

Additionally, troopers from the Charlton Barracks are on scene of a crash involving a tractor trailer and a car at the 76 mile marker eastbound, with no injuries reported. Troopers from the Tunnels Barracks are at a disabled tractor trailer unit on Route 93 southbound, lower deck, in Boston. Speed limit reduced to 40 mph, and propane tankers and tandems restricted from New York line to Boston. Midnight shift being extended throughout the morning rush hour.

Logan Airport: Heavy snow with light vehicular traffic. Airport open and operations ongoing. Two runways open. No significant incidents.
