Joe Amoroso attended a small vigil on Deer Island for the two-year-old, who previously was known as "Baby Doe" around New England, Friday night. Initially, Amoroso supported Rachelle Bond and believed she wasn't involved in their child's murder.
"There's no way, for one minute, I am buying her story. She's lied to me before. She's lied to me again," he said.
Bella's paternal grandmother, Patricia Quinn, says she last saw her granddaughter more than two years ago. Bella was only eight months old.
Last week, she says Bond returned to her home without the toddler. Quinn says she found out what happened on television the following day.
"I was watching the breaking news and Bella came on and Rachelle was sitting there and said, 'That's my daughter, Bella,'" she said.
Amoroso claims Bond confessed to him Thursday night, the day before Bond was arrested. He did not contact authorities.
"I didn't have to. The authorities were all over the investigation. The warrants had already been sent out. They were all over this case," he said.
Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley says charges won't be brought against Amoroso.
"We can perhaps say that he's morally culpable. He certainly should have picked up the phone and done something earlier," Conley said. "But from a criminal responsibility point of view, there aren't statutes that would be applicable here."
"Of course I have regrets. Absolutely. I could have done things different," Amoroso said.
Michael McCarthy is charged with murdering Bella. Rachelle Bond is charged as an accessory after the fact.
Funeral arrangements for the child haven't been announced.
