Candlelight Vigil Marks One Month Since 'Baby Doe' Discovery

WINTHROP (CBS) – About 100 people gathered for a candlelight vigil for Baby Doe on Deer Island, Saturday.

"It's just sad and it's hard for me to believe that no one knows what happened to this little one," said Patti Cheever.

She added flowers to a growing memorial near where the 4-year old's body was discovered. A month ago the girl's body was found in a trash bag. She was clothed and had a fleece blanket with her.

Debbie Larson lives in Georgetown, but she organized the vigil. She has a 4-year old daughter of her own.

"It was heartbreaking, heartbreaking. I can't believe anyone could do this to a child," said Larson.

George Legner attended the vigil to show respect. "I think this just shows the support that the community has for this girl and the hope of finding answers," said Legner.

Those in attendance started calling the girl Baby Angel. Some wrote messages with rocks like "Rest in Peace."

Saturday night was Patti Cheever's first visit to Deer Island. She like many felt she had to attend the vigil for a child who still remains unnamed.

"Maybe if enough people come, her spirit will have comfort until we find who she is," said Cheever.

Investigators are still asking the public for tips to help identify the girl.

State Police created a pair of anonymous lines to help the public pass along tips.

Anyone with information can text GIRL followed by the tip to 67283. Tips can also be called into the hotline by contacting (617) 396-5655.

"You will be helping us speak for this child," police said.
