BOSTON (CBS) – Scott Allen, golf pro at George Wright, and Joe Leary, director of golf for the DCR, joined Hardy on the Golf Club Saturday to talk about a very special cause.

Last month, two of Boston’s bravest perished while fighting a 9-alarm blaze on Beacon Street in the Back Bay. Lieutenant Edward Walsh and Michael Kennedy were laid to rest the following week.

When Scott Allen heard the news he knew he had to spring into action.

“After the tragedy with the fire in town we decided to get together and do a little something to help out. What we’re gonna do is offer lessons all the way through the end of May, and anybody who takes golf lessons [with us] we’re gonna take that money and donate it to the Lieutenant Walsh – Firefighter Kennedy Memorial Fund. We’re basically giving lessons all day long, and if people choose to do that we’re gonna make the checks out to that fund so I can deliver it to the firemen union on behalf of them.”

When Joe Leary heard of Scott’s plan he was on board immediately.

“After I talked to Scott I thought it was a great idea. I reached out to some of the golf pros that work with us. … Everyone was on board to help out the families.”

George Wright in Hyde Park and Leo J. Martin in Weston are the two participating courses.  Lessons are $40 for a half hour, or you can get five lessons for the price of four. Checks will be made out to the fund and deposited at the end of May.
