NEW BEDFORD (CBS/AP) — A New Bedford man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally stabbing another man outside a soup kitchen.

The Bristol district attorney’s office says 24-year-old Jonathan Keith Niemic was convicted and sentenced on Friday. He has been held without bail since his arrest in October 2010 on a murder charge in connection with the death of 34-year-old Michael Correia of Fairhaven.

State police troopers and New Bedford police detectives arrested Niemic about eight hours after the stabbing outside an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting near a soup kitchen on Purchase Street. Niemic was found hiding in an apartment complex.

The case was nearly thrown out after prosecutors allowed a grand jury to hear confidential tapes between Niemic and his attorney. Despite the prosecutors’ mistake, a judge had refused to drop the charges.
