Man Accused In Fatal Stabbing Outside New Bedford Church

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - A New Bedford man is headed to court to face charges that he fatally stabbed another man outside of a city church.

The Bristol district attorney's office announced that 22-year-old Jonathan Keith Niemic was arrested at about 3 a.m. on Thursday in connection with the death of 34-year-old Michael Correia of Fairhaven.

New Bedford police received 911 calls at about 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday about a stabbing outside of a church on Purchase Street. Prosecutors did not name the church, but the Pilgrim United Church of Christ is in that area.

Correia was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Prosecutors did not immediately say if the stabbing was connected to the church. Niemic is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday. It was not clear if he had an attorney.
