SOUTH BOSTON (CBS) – Parishioners at the church Whitey Bulger used to attend spoke out Sunday about the capture of the notorious mob boss.

Some churchgoers at St. Monica-St. Augustine Church in Southie said they were actually saying prayers for Whitey. Long-time parishioner Anna Murphy said Whitey and his brother, former senate president Billy Bulger, were “good guys.”

“I know Whitey very well. Whitey was a loner in a way. He was a good guy. He was good to different people, you know. And his brother Billy is a jewel,” said Murphy.

Others said the fact that Bulger regularly attended Mass and donated thousands of dollars to the church in the 80’s and early 90’s doesn’t excuse his bad behavior and violent past.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Kim Tunnicliffe reports.

“I’m glad they got him. Absolutely! I feel sad for the family. Very sad. I’m glad he’s not my relative,” said one parishioner.

Another parishioner said the mob boss will likely take a lot of people down with him now that he’s talking to the FBI.

“I think he’s got a lot to say,” said one man. “He might bring a lot of people down with him, actually, not just FBI, because somebody’s been helping him the last 15 years. There’s no telling who it might be.”

Some said they were surprised it to so long to capture Whitey, but others said they thought they would never see the day come.

“I’m glad they caught him. I never thought they would,” said another man. “I thought that maybe he was dead already someplace. I think he’s gonna get what he deserves.”
