MBTA Expands 'Quiet Car' Program To All Commuter Rail Lines

BOSTON (CBS) - The MBTA has announced it will expand the quiet car program on all Commuter Rail lines on a permanent basis.

Now, the MBTA will be expanding the quiet cars to all rush hour Commuter Rail trains. The program began as an experiment and apparently commuters have embraced it.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Kim Tunnicliffe reports.

"It makes for a much nicer, much nicer ride," said one commuter. "I look for (a quiet car) every time I travel."

MBTA General Manager Richard Davey said cell phone use is banned in quiet cars, and voices have to be kept to a whisper.

"Read the newspaper. Maybe get a little work done. Unfortunately, it's like we have to rope off civility these days. Maybe this is one of those areas that civility is expected. It's the rule, not the exception," said Davey.
