Boston Area's Best 2014 Veterans Day Events

November 11 is a special day set aside for the respect and honoring of United States veterans. The men and women who have fought in the defense of their country are celebrated in many ways on and around this day every year. In Boston, there is an annual parade that anyone can attend, but there are also some great perks for vets, events and more. Whether revelers are veterans, related to veterans or simply appreciate the sacrifices large and small made by veterans, there is a way to recognize the holiday in Boston.

Every year, the USS Constitution Museum pays homage to the first US Marine Corps officer to die aboard the ship during the War of 1812. This memorial breakfast in honor of LT William S. Bush is held around Veterans Day and features a guest speaker. The event is military formal and does include some Marine Corps traditional ceremonies. Interested parties can get individual tickets or become a sponsor, packages for which come with tickets to the breakfast.

This event is held in recognition of the female veterans in Massachusetts. It is held in Memorial Hall at the State House. Every veteran and families of veterans are welcome to attend this event. One outstanding female veteran will be the recipient of the Deborah Sampson award during the gathering. This award is named after one of Massachusetts' first female veterans. Guests will be provided with refreshments.

Just after Veterans Day, the Massachusetts Department of Veterans Services is getting together with Habitat for Humanity to create homes for female veterans. A non-gender related build will take place a few weeks before. The build is going on a bit north of Boston and is open to all veterans and veteran family members. Participants do not need construction skills in order to help. Any and all help is welcome to make this project come to life.

Back On My Feet Boston is hosting a walk and run that lets anyone walk alongside veterans to help support those in need. This is all about getting veterans home in another sense of the phrase. Many veterans come back to the U.S. and are unable to integrate or support themselves. As a result, they become homeless. Help them get back on their feet and find a home again by walking to raise funds. Participants do not even have to know a veteran to get involved.

Date: Third Friday of every month at 1:30 p.m.

While not expressly an event for Veterans Day, veterans can take advantage of this free clinic on the third Friday of November. There & Back Again uses the knowledge that coming home for veterans means a combination of physical and mental wellness. Combining the two with services like massage, yoga, acupuncture and reflexology, professionals help veterans center themselves at no cost to them. Tell a veteran about these services and help them relieve the stress that is virtually universal among veterans.
