Like the snow, days off for schools are beginning to pile up, and that has many cities and towns considering drastic measures.

The Boston School Committee has approved plans intended to plug a projected $63 million budget deficit over the next fiscal year and improve the quality of academic programs.
“There are 5,600 empty seats in our school district. These empty seats are costing taxpayers over $20 million a year,” Mayor Menino said Tuesday.
