Young Woman, 2 Dogs Killed In Tyngsboro House Fire

TYNGSBORO (CBS) – A young woman died Thursday after being pulled from a burning home in Tyngsboro. It happened just after 9 a.m. on Fletcher Drive.

Police and firefighters rushed to the house after receiving multiple 911 calls. When they arrived, a man was outside the home and said someone was trapped inside. Neighbors said the man stays in a building on the property and is in a wheelchair, so he could not enter the house.

A police officer who arrived first tried to rush inside. "He was unable to get through the thick smoke and had to retreat to the outside of the building," said Tyngsboro Police Chief Richard Howell.

Firefighters arrived moments later and found the woman unconscious in a bedroom.

"Crews made quick entry and had a little bit of a challenge getting through the home and getting to the back bedroom where they were able to find the victim and removed her from the home," Tyngsboro Fire Chief Wes Russell said.

She was taken to a hospital but did not survive. Two dogs were also killed in the fire.

Neighbors said the victim is a 22-year-old woman who lived in the home with her mother and longtime companion.

"She was a very kind girl, she always said hi," neighbor John Smith said. "She loved her animals, she loved life."

Firefighters said the fire started on the first floor before ripping through the attic.

The cause is still under investigation.
