MSPCA Waives Adoption Fees For Companion Horses

METHUEN (CBS) – The MSPCA trotted horses out for a sort of test drive for potential rescuers at Nevins Farm in Methuen Tuesday night.

"She's a pretty little girl and she seems calm," said Barbara Smith, a potential adopter. Smith is talking about Stella, a retired race horse that could be a companion for her elderly horse in Ipswich.

"Kill two birds with one stone, give her a home, and give him a companion," Smith said.

Stella is one of 12 horses up for adoption.

"They are such sweet creatures and they definitely show unconditional love," said Gia Barss of the MSPCA. "They have great personalities."

Most of the horses are considered elderly in their twenties and many have health conditions. And for the first time in over a century, for two weeks, the organization is waiving the $200 fee making the adoption free.

"They genuinely are looking for homes for these animals and if I can be one the advocates to take one of them, I can support them and give them a good home," Barbara Smith said.
