Keller @ Large: Sexual Harassment Of Disabled MBTA Riders Is Appalling

BOSTON (CBS) - If you're a decent human being, you don't approve of sexual harassment. Molestation, rape, unwanted sexual overtures or harassment, they're all different forms of conduct that violate basic human rights and convey profound disregard for social norms and disrespect for others. To me, all that seems like a huge no-brainer, but it seems not everyone feels the same way.

As we've been reminded ad nauseam during this campaign, former President Bill Clinton has been a chronic sexual harasser, something too many people were willing to ignore when he was president.

And if the multiple stories about Donald trump's serial harassment are to be believed, along with his own words on that infamous audiotape, downplaying and enabling sexual transgressions remain a bipartisan activity.

So I was appalled, but not surprised to see our coverage Thursday of a new MBTA campaign to crackdown on sexual harassment by T customers of other customers - in particular, disabled riders.

Are you kidding me?

What kind of sick animal takes advantage of a crowded train to violate the space of anyone, let alone a blind person or someone in a wheelchair? It defies understanding, and deserves the most aggressive social censure and backlash we can muster.

T officials are doing what they can to spread the word about this, and we can only hope that decent customers take the initiative to help them police this repulsive behavior.

If we all do our part, we can turn the T into an unsafe space for predators like this to do their thing.

Then we can turn our attention to making sure this kind of thing is completely unwelcome, wherever it occurs.
