Woman Killed, 5 Hurt In Mass Pike Crash In Westboro

WESTBORO (CBS) – One person was killed and five others were hospitalized with serious injuries following a one-car crash early Saturday morning on the Massachusetts Turnpike in Westboro.

Police said for reasons not yet known, the driver of a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer lost control of the vehicle in the westbound lanes, left the road and slammed into a rock ledge around 1:30 a.m.

Following the impact of the crash, the 20-year-old Worcester man behind the wheel was ejected, along with three other people.

One of the people who was ejected, a 26-year-old woman from Spencer, was struck by several other cars. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver was taken to UMass Medical Center with serious injuries. Also hospitalized were an 18-year-old woman from Shrewsbury, a 21-year-old Charlton man, a 35-year-old Spencer man, and a 36-year-old man from Worcester.

Police have not released any identities.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
