Firefighters Rescue 6 Trapped Residents From Fast-Moving Worcester Fire

WORCESTER (CBS) – Two children were among six residents rescued from the top floor of a Worcester home during an early morning fire.

Firefighters responded to Pelham Street around 5:30 a.m., and when they arrived discovered that six people were calling for help from the third floor.

All six people were rescued and taken to an area hospital with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries.

"The first arriving companies did a fantastic job of saving those civilians' lives," Worcester Deputy Fire Chief John Sullivan told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

A cause has not yet been determined. Firefighters said power was out in the area from flooding when they arrived, so the fire may be storm-related.

Earlier in the evening, Worcester firefighters rescued several dozen people from cars in flooded areas of the city.

"We were out straight earlier in the night," said Sullivan. "So everyone was pretty well soaked from the work we had done earlier in the night."
