Red Sox' Magic Number Down To One After Blue Jays Lose

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox have already clinched a playoff berth, but they're now on the verge of making an American League East win a reality.

Despite division titles being relatively rare for the Red Sox, in 2016 the team has gotten hot at the best possible time of the season. Their magic number to win the AL East is down to one after the Toronto Blue Jays lost to the New York Yankees 7-5 in the Bronx Monday night while the Red Sox were idle.

To clinch the division, the Red Sox either need one more win or one more Blue Jays loss. An AL East win would be the first for the Red Sox since 2013. The Blue Jays have a tiny sliver of hope in the form of a possible one-game playoff that would happen if the Red Sox lost their final six games and the Blue Jays won out. Considering the Red Sox' run in September, that seems highly unlikely at this point.

Boston travels to New York for a three-game set with the Yankees starting Tuesday. After the Yankees' final chance to play "spoiler," the Blue Jays come to Fenway Park for three games to close out the regular season.
