Brad Marchand Signs 8-Year Extension With Bruins

BOSTON (CBS) — The Boston Bruins have inked winger Brad Marchand to an eight-year contract extension worth $49 million. The deal will pay Marchand an average of about $6.125 million per season.

“This is an extremely exciting day for me and my family,” said Marchand. “I would like to thank the Jacobs family, Cam Neely, Don Sweeney, Claude Julien, the coaching staff, my teammates and our fans for their continued support and belief in me. I have been a Bruin since the start of my pro career and there is no place I would rather play. I look forward to doing everything I can to help our team achieve success and bring the Stanley Cup back to Boston.”

TSN’s Bob McKenzie first reported the extension on Twitter. This means Marchand is signed in Boston through the 2024-25 season and it locks up one of the team’s core players and top offensive threats.

According to ESPN’s Craig Custance, the extension includes a full no-movement clause for the first five seasons before a limited no-trade clause begins after that.

Marchand, 28, set career highs in 2015-16 with 37 goals and 61 points.

He will play this season in the final year of a four-year, $18 million contract.

Marchand has topped the 20-goal mark in every season since 2010 except the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, in which he scored 18. He has scored 153 goals and 289 points in 454 career NHL games, playing a key role in winning the Stanley Cup with the Bruins in 2011.

He has spent much of September playing for Team Canada in the World Cup of Hockey, scoring five points in four games while playing on a line with Sidney Crosby.
