Lowell Woman Fatally Struck By Pickup Truck In School Parking Lot

LOWELL (CBS) -- A woman was killed Monday after being hit by a pickup truck in an elementary school parking lot.

Police say a food service pickup truck pulled into the parking space at the Charlotte Murkland Elementary School shortly after 11a.m. but was directed to move. The truck backed up and struck the woman.

"He back up, and he backed up on her, and I don't think he knew and then he dragged her into the parking spot," said Jennifer Flores, who witnessed the incident.

"He just kept saying 'I didn't see her, I didn't see her,'" Flores said.

The victim has been identified as 70-year-old Claudia Normandin of Lowell.

Friends this was her regular route for daily errands.

"She used to talk to everybody. She was nice to everybody. She never hurt anybody," said Thomas Harmon.

At her apartment building a few blocks away, friends were heartbroken for her family.

"My prayers are with them," said Elizabeth Monsanto. "I'm praying for them."

Investigators are looking into the possibility that Normandin may have been in the truck's blind spot. Police say the driver is cooperating with investigators.
