Elderly Woman Jolted Awake By Stray Bullet

LOWELL (CBS) – An elderly Lowell woman is brushing off a close call after a stray bullet came flying into her home as she slept.

The woman, who did not wish to be identified, has lived in her Lowell home for 81 years.

Normally she had nothing to worry about except her neighbors setting off fireworks. But early Monday morning she was startled awake by a bullet.

"It's kind of hard for me to believe it," she said.

The bullet left a hole in the woman's curtain, went straight through one wall and into a second room.

Lowell Police say this is the fourth case of a stray bullet hitting a building since Saturday.

Her dog was rattled, but the woman didn't think much of what happened just feet from her bed until she called the police hours later.

She says she'll sleep fine at night, adding that this is a first time something like this has happened in her eight decades on the street – and she believes it'll be the last.

"I was very lucky," the woman said. "I'm not shaking over it. I just think it was some nut that just wanted to fire a shot off."
