Phantom Gourmet: Revolution American Bistro In Cranston, RI

CRANSTON, RI - A sandwich stuffed into an egg roll. Meatloaf that looks more like a muffin. Pizza that tastes like pierogis. It seems like there's a revolution of eating underway in Cranston, Rhode Island, and it's all happening at Revolution American Bistro.

Located in charming Pawtuxet Village, Revolution is a casual spot perfect to bring a date, your family, or for a night out on the town. It doesn't matter who you're dining with, because the menu has a little something for everybody.

"When I say, 'we're all things to all people,' we really try to be that," said Chef Dean Scanlon. "We want to give you the Rib Eye with mashed potato and asparagus; or wings, or a pizza, or a burger. We've got so much that it really is the one-stop shop for the pickiest of you and your friends."

Chef Dean and his team are fanatics for fusion, making flavor combinations like you've never tasted. Take for example, the Pierogi Pizza.

"A Pierogi is a Polish dumpling, only we take those ingredients and put it on a pizza. So you're getting a pizza crust; you're getting the mashed potato; we use sour cream on top. You get the scallion, so it gives a little onion flavor; and the bacon, of course, is a little crispness to it."

Another favorite is the Reuben eggroll, which gives a classic deli sandwich an Asian spin.

"We've got Swiss cheese and sauerkraut, corned beef that we chopped up. We roll them in real egg roll wrappers, and we serve the Thousand Island dressing on the side. It's very much like a Reuben, only it packs a punch inside," explained Dean.

There are amped of versions of comfort foods, like the Cupcake Meatloaf served with wild mushroom gravy over a bed of mashed potatoes; Lobster Mac and cheese in a creamy Madiera cheese sauce with a nice buttery, toasted top; and some of the best Buttermilk Fried Chicken you can find, served over an even more decadent Mac and Cheese spiked with Black Forest Ham.

"I would say it's comfort food at its finest," said Chef Dean. "Crunchy exterior, it's got that little bit of nook and cranny effect, nice moist hot chicken breast inside. When you cut into it, the steam's coming out. The mac and cheese is there. You can smell the ham and everything together. A little bit of honey drizzle over that buttermilk fried chicken, and it's been a home-run for us."

For something a little different, order Billy's Kickin Shrimp. Created by Chef Billy Hickey, this dish is a feast for the eyes and the stomach. This elegant app features lightly fried shrimp tossed in a sweet chili sauce and garnished with scallions, peppers and sesame seeds.

"It's crispy, and crunchy, and sweet, and spicy, and awesome. We put it in a martini glass with chopsticks, and it's really cool," Dean said. "It's a really nice-looking dish."

If you prefer your shrimp in a scampi sauce, try the Shrimp Toast, packed with plenty of seafood and garlic over crunchy bread.

"The bread is what soaks up all the flavor, and all the love from the sauce," explained Dean. "We use delicious rustic Italian toast points to give us that added value and texture."

Other appetizers include Hog Wings slathered in sauce, and addictive Buffalo Wings. Burger fanatics should definitely order the Berube Burger, loaded up with everything you love.

"It's got onion strings, and thick-cut slab bacon, and seriously sharp cheddar cheese, Sriracha mayonnaise, and the free-running fried egg; between a nice soft bun, and an eight-ounce burger, which we make here on premise every day," Chef Dean described. "Burgers are one of our biggest sellers, hundreds of burgers a week, every week, without fail."
