Ex-Boston Police Officer Pleads Guilty To Gift Card Fraud

BOSTON (AP) — A former Boston police officer has pleaded guilty to using illegally obtained gift cards to make more than $1,600 in purchases.

Nine-year veteran Eddie Odney pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to one count of access device fraud. As part of the plea, he also resigned from the police department.

Prosecutors say the 38-year-old Odney knowingly purchased about $5,000 worth of gift cards through a shoplifting ring. The ring allegedly stole expensive merchandise from stores, returned the items to the stores in exchange for gift cards, and then sold the cards for half their dollar value.

The cards were from several stores, including T.J. Maxx, Macy's, and HomeGoods.

Odney faces up to 10 years in prison at sentencing on Nov. 3.
