Emergency Crews Rescue Skydiver In Pepperell Who Landed In Tree

PEPPERELL (CBS) -- Sunday was a beautiful day to hang in the sky and parachute to the ground. But, one skydiver ended up hanging out somewhere unexpected.

Manny Ullaguari is learning how to solo skydive at Skydive Pepperell. He was almost to the landing zone when he landed in a tree.

"There was a lot of wind earlier today - it can be our friend and it can be our foe - and at this point on the superficial level it looks like he might have turned when he shouldn't have," said David Goldstein, instructor, and safety and training advisor.

It took fire rescue crews about 45 minutes to pull him from the branches. They had to find a bucket truck that could reach.

"I was hanging," said Manny.

Manny who skydived in his native Guatemala said there a few nervous moments when he realized he was off course.

"It happens - afraid maybe I hit my head on the tree," said Manny.

Goldstein said with the chutes used these days, and training, not many skydivers have a story like Manny's - flying into a tree.

"It's not very common anymore. It's a great sport. We are very, very safety conscious," said Goldstein.

Manny was checked out at the hospital. He only has a small scrape on his chest to show for his adventure. His biggest injury was to his ego.

He came back to skydive again on Sunday after his accident, but decided to wait until next weekend.
