Mass. State Police troopers pulled Kurtzer over Tuesday on a marked lanes violation. When they asked him if there were any weapons in his vehicle, Kurtzer replied, "Lots of them."

When police asked him to show a license for the weapons, Kurtzer said he didn't have one. He was then placed under arrest.

An affidavit released Wednesday showed the FBI had been watching Kurtzer for the past two months. Along with State and Weymouth Police, they went to his home on Memorial Drive in Weymouth. There, Kurtzer's girlfriend let authorities search the home.

In the affidavit, the FBI said Kurtzer's girlfriend asked them to remove any "unsafe" items from the home, as she worried for the safety of her two children.

Authorities said they found two assault rifles, one bolt-action rifle with the serial number destroyed, two handguns, one assembled and six partly-assembled silencers, ammunition, and machines used to make firearms.

Police also searched a storage unit at Discount Self Storage II on Winter Street in Weymouth belonging to Kurtzer. There, they found over 650 rounds of various types of ammunition.

Kurtzer made a brief noon appearance in U.S. District Court in Boston Wednesday.

He remains in the custody of U.S. Marshals.

According to the affidavit, Kurtzer has a long criminal history, including 52 arraignments, five restraining orders, and a 2001 conviction for armed robbery.

Neighbors said they watched as authorities brought out multiple boxes of evidence.

"I saw boxes of guns, guns, guns all laid on the ground and all laid out on a table. It was scary to see those there," said neighbor Bonnie McCluskey.

Kurtzer is expected to appear in court again next Tuesday for a detention hearing.
