Gov. Baker Reviewing $39.1B State Budget

BOSTON (AP) — Republican Gov. Charlie Baker may be spending part of the holiday weekend reviewing the state budget shipped to him by state lawmakers.

The Massachusetts House and Senate gave final approval to the $39.1 billion spending plan for the 2017 fiscal year on Thursday, the last day of the 2016 fiscal year.

Baker has 10 days to review the budget before signing it and issuing vetoes.

Lawmakers grappled with a last-minute drop in anticipated revenues for the new fiscal year.

Democratic Senate Ways and Means Chairwoman Karen Spilka says the committee charged with hammering out a final compromise budget had to reduce those revenues by $750 million.

Baker has said the revenue gap is because of a slide in anticipated capital gains taxes. It could be as high as $950 million.
