Citgo Sign Could Become Official Boston Landmark

BOSTON (CBS) – A campaign is underway to protect one of Boston's most recognizable symbols.

The Boston Globe reports that the Boston Landmarks Commission is considering granting official landmark status to the Citgo sign.

An online petition supporting the plan has nearly 3,000 supporters.

"It has become as iconic of Boston as Old North Church and the Swan Boats," Greg Galer, executive director of the Boston Preservation Alliance, told The Globe. "We're trying to demonstrate that there's broad public support for keeping it."

Boston University is preparing to sell the building beneath the Kenmore Square sign.

The school tells the newspaper it hopes the new owner keeps the sign up, but that won't be a requirement of the sale.
