Boston College Baseball Drops First Super Regional Contest To Miami

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Johnny Ruiz had two home runs for a career-high five RBIs, and Zack Collins drove in three runs to help Miami beat Boston College 12-7 on Friday night in the Coral Gables Super Regional.

Michael Mediavilla (11-1) struck out seven and gave up two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings for Miami (49-11). Bryan Garcia picked up his 17th save by striking out Donovan Casey with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Miami scored four runs in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. Collins, the 10th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox, hit a three-run homer and two batters later, Ruiz homered. Ruiz added a grand slam in the eighth as Miami sent 10 to the plate and scored five.

Boston College (34-21) starter Justin Dunn (4-2) was chased in the sixth. The 19th overall selection by the New York Mets gave up five runs and struck out six.

The start was delayed for about two hours due to rain and lightning.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series is Saturday. The series winner will advance to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.
