Keller @ Large: Life Lessons From Likeable 2016 Red Sox

BOSTON (CBS) – As regular listeners here know, I love pretty much all sports, especially those involving Boston teams, of course.

But there is something special about baseball. And among the things that make it special are the life lessons baseball can teach you.

Take this year's Red Sox.

Their unexpected success so far this season is due to many factors, including the deliberation and thoughtfulness they display as they go about their business.

They study the opposition carefully and seem well-versed on the opponents' strengths and weaknesses.

They work the count, hit to the opposite field, take the extra base and hit the cutoff man, all the little things that make the difference between a decent team and a division leader.

Major league players with millionaire salaries can often be arrogant and selfish, but the Sox seem remarkably free of that kind of nonsense. They appear to get along well with each other and their coaches.

If there are snotty cliques in the clubhouse like the fried-chicken-and-beer crowd of a few years back, we're not aware of them.

There also does not appear to be anything fake about this year's Red Sox. No false hustle, no prioritizing personal stats over team success, no phoniness of any kind.

How refreshing.

Perhaps this will hold up all season, perhaps not. But so far, the Red Sox are modeling intelligence, poise, likeability and authenticity.

If only this were the presidential race, not just the pennant race.
