Wade Boggs Wears Yankees World Series Ring During Wednesday’s Ceremony At Fenway

BOSTON (CBS) — The Red Sox will retire Wade Boggs’ No. 26 on Thursday night, but “The Chicken Man” may want to rethink the bling he wears on the field.

When Boggs and other members of the 1986 Red Sox took the field at Fenway Park Wednesday night for a ceremony honoring the 30th anniversary of that team’s run to the World Series, Boggs had his 1996 World Series ring on his right hand — a title he won with the rival New York Yankees.

This would obviously sting much more had the Red Sox not won a World Series title — let alone three — in the last 16 years. The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry has gone from heated to just a smidge over lukewarm in recent years, and Boston fans have eased up a bit with their hatred of everything Yankees.

Boggs is known for wearing the ring to just about every event he attends, so it really shouldn’t be much of a surprise. But it would probably be a good idea to keep the ring in his pocket when the spotlight is on him Thursday night.
