Keller @ Large: Why Golf Is So Appealing

BOSTON (CBS) - They announced six new inductees into the Massachusetts Golf Hall of Fame Tuesday, and I am shocked and appalled to see that my name was not among them!

Just kidding, the honorees are all major local golf figures, while I am just another faceless member of the huddled masses of weekend duffers, hacking my way around my local course with very little skill, but a lot of pleasure.

What is it about golf that's so appealing?

Consider what it offers that is too often missing from everyday life.

For starters, the camaraderie.

I have played hundreds of rounds with foursomes that at times included complete strangers, and have yet to get stuck with a jerk.
Instead, my fellow golfers are invariably supportive, cheering on the rare good shots and keeping politely silent when I start kicking up massive divots.

Golf has been called a great way to spoil a perfectly nice walk, but I find it hard to get frustrated when I'm out in nature smelling the roses.

And after all, while it continues to be a miracle every time I break a hundred, there was that one time I shot a hole in one.

Darn it, I'm out of time, or else I'd tell you about it in excruciating detail.

Anyway, congrats to the new Hall of Famers.

You may be playing at a different level than I am, but there's no way you're enjoying it any more.
