Codman Academy Humanities Teacher Named Teacher Of The Year
BOSTON (CBS/AP) — A ninth-grade humanities teacher at a Boston charter school has been named Massachusetts Teacher of the Year.
Sydney Chaffee, who has been teaching at Codman Academy Charter Public School in Dorchester since 2007, was honored at a ceremony at the school Tuesday.
In addition to her teaching duties, Chaffee mentors student teachers; serves as humanities department chair; coordinates a weekly, student-led, assembly; serves as a "crew leader" for a dozen female students; and encourages all her students to participate in the national Poetry Out Loud competition and perform in an end-of-year play.
Codman Academy Principal Thabiti Brown calls Chaffee "an unstoppable teaching force for good."
The Saugerties, New York, native has degrees from Sarah Lawrence College and Lesley University.
She is now eligible for national Teacher of the Year honors.
