More Children Ingesting Laundry Pods, New Study Finds
CINCINNATI, Ohio (CBS) – There's a new warning for parents of young children about the dangers of laundry detergent pods.
A study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that more kids are ingesting the colorful products that can look like candy.
There were 62,254 calls to poison control centers in 2013 to 2014 related to laundry packets – that's a 17 percent increase, according to the study.
The study also concluded there were 17 cases of comas, six cases of respiratory arrest and two cases of cardiac arrest because children ingested the pods.
Last year, Consumer Reports stopped recommending pods to readers because of the potential danger.
Product makers say they're adopting voluntary safety changes to address parents' concerns.
Procter & Gamble, which manufactures Tide Pods, is making the packets stronger and coating the outer film with a bitter-tasting substance.
