Police Cite Driver In Crash That Killed Weymouth Teen

WEYMOUTH (CBS) -- Police have charged a 16-year-old Weymouth boy in connection to a crash on Union Street that killed a 15-year-old girl last weekend.

The teen, who is not being identified due to his age, has been issued a citation for motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, as well as failure to keep right, speeding, and violating a restriction on having passengers under 18 during the first six months of having a permit.

The 15-year-old girl killed in the crash was identified Sunday as Kate McCarthy of Weymouth.

On Wednesday, the McCarthy family issued a statement thanking family, friends, and the community for support and remembering Kate.

"Kate was a ray of sunshine and happiness," the family wrote in the statement. "She was blessed with beauty both inside and out. She had so many friends because she was kind to everyone."

"We are trying to make sense of all of this. A bright light has gone out in our world - many lives are shattered."

Investigators said the crash happened around 11 p.m. last Saturday when the driver lost control of the SUV, smashing into a telephone pole, two parked cars and a tree.

The teen driver and two other passengers were injured. Two of the passengers, including McCarthy, were ejected from the vehicle.

The cause of the accident has not been determined. Weymouth Police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
