Middleborough Man Rescues Police Officer Injured By Accused Drunk Driver

MIDDLEBOROUGH (CBS) - A Middleborough man did not hesitate to help an injured police officer who was hit by an accused drunk driver. Despite his deed, he wants the focus to stay on the "real heroes."

Garett Holmes happened to have a sleepless night when he heard a loud bang. Two cars had collided feet away from his home. Holmes ran out to help.

"I would like to think most people would do the same thing," said Garett Holmes.

It was 1:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. Eddy Street was dark. "Went over to the police car - that was the first point I realized it was a police car," said Holmes.

Officer Richard Harvey was alert, but trapped in his cruiser.

"You got a lot of front end damage," said Lt. Todd Bazarewsky as he showed Harvey's cruiser.

The driver door was damaged, and Harvey couldn't open the door as his arm was injured.

"Mr. Holmes came around and ripped the door open," said Bazarewsky. "Given today's environment with the anti-police sentiment absolutely love guys like Mr. Holmes.

Police said 19-year old Jacob Folsom drove drunk. Harvey saw him coming and pulled over as far as he could to the side road before the hit.

Holmes said he made sure both drivers were OK. Once he saw the cruiser, he said he had one thought. "Oh no, another injured police officer with everything that's been on the news."

While the police are grateful for his help, Garett Holmes wants to keep the focus on them.

"It's frightening the danger they get into everyday just showing up for work," said Holmes.

Officer Harvey is recovering at home. He has injuries to his arm and back.
